British Values

Holly Lodge is committed to serving our community and surrounding areas. We recognise that the United Kingdom is a richly diverse, multicultural and multi-faith country, and understand our responsibility in promoting and encouraging a culture and ethos that upholds British Values. We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subject to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

Holly Lodge follows equal opportunities guidance which guarantees that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar. We are dedicated to preparing pupils for their adult life in modern Britain beyond the formal examined curriculum, serving the whole community and ensuring that it actively promotes and reinforces British values to all its pupils.

The government emphasises that schools have a duty to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK Schools. The four British Values as outlined in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and 2016 Keeping Children Safe in Education, are as follows:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Holly Lodge we actively promote British Values in the following ways:

Democracy

  • All learners are encouraged to debate topics of interest, express their views and make a meaningful contribution to the running of the school on matters that directly involve them.
  • Elections are part of the process for electing School Council representatives. Pupils have a voice that is listened through the School Council. Learners also have the opportunity to have their voices heard through pupil questionnaires and pupil surveys.
  • Tutor groups take part in Student Voice assemblies.
  • Learners have input regarding the Rewards and Achievement system.
  • Learners have had active involvement in the selection process of new staff.
  • The principle of Democracy is explored in History, Religious Education.
  • The school actively raises awareness of the democracy by running mock elections and running awareness raising sessions. This often gets recognition externally e.g. SHAPE Democracy award 2016

The Rule of Law

  • Learners are always encouraged and helped to distinguish right from wrong, in the classroom, around the school site and in the local and wider community.
  • Learners are encouraged to respect and uphold the Law and Holly Lodge enjoys working partnerships with authorities such as the Police and Fire Service.

  • School rules and expectations are clear, fair and regularly promoted.
  • The school actively supports Anti–Bullying in all forms and learners have a key role in this.
  • Laws and legislation are explored further across the school through Citizenship, Pupil Development Mornings and Subject Immersion Days.
  • The Curriculum also develops knowledge of The Rule of Law through History? Business Studies and Law.
  • Y 9 student’s take place in a area wide Magistrates Court competition as well as having visits to examine the system first hand.

Individual Liberty

  • Learners are supported to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour and the schools pastoral support reinforces the importance of making the right choices.
  • Within school, learners are actively encouraged, and given the freedom to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment e.g. working with and for the school council representing those views to the governing body of the school.
  • Learners are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely. This is done through our E-Safety, PSHE lessons, assemblies, Personal Development Mornings and Subject Immersion Days.
  • Vulnerable students are protected and stereotypes challenged. A strong anti-bullying culture is embedded in the school and any form of bullying is challenged and addressed. The whole school takes part in Anti-Bullying week and students take part in Anti-bullying workshops run by Sandwell Youth Project.
  • We actively challenge any individual expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • Respect is one of the core values of our school. Learners are helped to know and understand that it is expected that respect is shown to everyone.
  • Learners are helped to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life. This is taught through Humanities subjects. It is also a key element of all year groups Personal Development and Subject Immersion programmes.
  • Staff and learners are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
  • Through the PSHE, Citizenship, RS curriculums and the ethos of the school, learners are encouraged to discuss and respect differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and differences of family situations.
  • As a very diverse school we offer a curriculum in which we help all learners understand the contribution that all faiths and cultures make in British Society.
  • Staff and students of the school actively take part in regular training and workshops about ‘PREVENT’, LGBT and anti-bullying.
