Premier for badmintonPremier for badmintonHolly Lodge High School has been awarded ‘Premier School’ status by Badminton England. The Smethwick school has been recognised for promoting the sport and is one of the first in the Black Country to make the grade.

A spokesperson from Badminton England said: “Holly Lodge School has an extensive history with badminton and has for a long time been the base for Holly Lodge Mills senior badminton club which is one of Smethwick’s longest standing badminton clubs.

“Badminton has also always been a popular choice for the school’s students and since the Premier League 4 Sport initiative with West Bromwich Albion has taken off, badminton in Holly Lodge has gone from strength to strength thanks to its motivated staff and enthusiastic pupils.

“The school now runs thriving after-school clubs as well as a community Junior Club which is open to all students from around the community. This level of commitment to the sport has now seen them achieve Badminton England Premier School status.

“Holly Lodge School are now looking to the future and are trying to improve and maintain the links they have with the community to promote a fit and healthy lifestyle in the local area.”

Head of PE, Alec Masson, said: “We’re really pleased to have this award as it reflects the hard work of our students and staff at Holly Lodge to create outstanding provision in badminton within the school and for the community.

“Badminton is a great sport that we’re thrilled to have in our portfolio, and we were delighted to take third place in the recent Black Country badminton finals.”
