Sixth Form Western Front Trip

27th-28th October 2018

During October half term,18 sixth form students went on the Western Front battlefields weekend. They travelled around Ypres going to different war cemeteries and museums to follow the story of Indian troops. Despite the damp, cold conditions, the students were able to gain a close insight into how Indian troops would have felt coming to a foreign land. They took part in the Menin Gate service three students had the honour of laying a wreath in memory to all the soldiers who have no known grave. Students also participated in placing remembrance plaques at Bedford House cemetery. They also visited the German cemetery of Langemark to compare how different countries commemorate their dead. The weekend ended with a visit to Neuve Chappelle, the largest memorial to Indian soldiers on the Western Front. Here we held our own remembrance service with students reading poems, holding a two minute silence and laying a wreath. Whilst on the trip, students were interviewed by BBC Asian Network about their experiences and what they have learnt on these trips. Their interviews have been featured on BBC Asian Radio and on BBC News/Asian Network Social Media. The students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and have gone on to share their experiences with the school through the Remembrance Assemblies.

Personal Development Day – Year 8 Trip: Sixth Form Western Front Trip
